Recently I mentioned to an acquaintance that I was setting up a mail server so that I could move away from Gmail. He asked me if I was using Mail-in-a-Box. I had no idea what that was - I was going through some instructions from Ars that I had used previously.
It turns out someone he knows runs this email project that is basically devoted to exactly what I wanted - a path to move away from my dependency on Gmail. I set up an Ubuntu VM on Linode and it worked very smoothly - it takes care of all the Postfix, Dovecot, Spamassassin, et cetera, configuration. I now use it to support my primary email addresses.
